The United States Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Seafood Inspection Program (USDC NOAA SIP) is the US competent authority for the export of live fishery products intended for human consumption. The Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946 (AMA: 7 U.S.C. 1621-1627) is the primary legislative authority for the services provided by the USDC SIP. The Fish and Wildlife Act of 1956 (16 U.S.C. 742e) also holds authorities for activities related to commercial fisheries provided by the USDC. Through cooperative agreements with State and local regulators, NOAA SIP provides guidance, information and/or certifications to the seafood industry attesting to the acceptability of live product relative to purchase specifications, domestic and foreign requirements, including safety, animal health and wholesomeness.
The live fishery product export environment provides challenges and hurdles that require regular communication between US Federal and State agencies.
